Letter to Federico Henríquez y Carvajal
In this letter, which is regarded as Martí's Political testament, he wrote to a Dominican friend: "I will arouse the world. But my one desire would be to stand beside the last tree, the last fighter, and die in silence. For me, my hour has come. But I still serve this one and only heart of our republics. The free Antilles will preserve the independence of our America, and the dubious and tarnished honor of Anglo-America, and perhaps may hasten and decide the balance of the world."

Considerada su testamento político, le dijo a su amigo dominicano: "...Yo alzaré el mundo. Pero mi único deseo sería pegarme allí, al último tronco, al último peleador: morir callado. Para mí ya es hora. Pero aún puedo servir a este único corazón de nuestras repúblicas. Las Antillas libres salvarán la independencia de nuestra América, y el honor ya dudoso y lastimado de la América inglesa, y acaso acelerarán y fijarán el equilibrio del mundo..."
